The Master Bedroom Chronicles

Our master bedroom has come a long way but I am not putting the big check mark next to it yet.

When we first moved in we set up our room similar to how the previous owners had it because it seemed like the thing to do. 

Here is how the house looked while it was still on the market:

I am pretty stinkin' embarrassed of our old master bedroom when I look at it now. But give me a bit of a break and remember that we had just moved in. We weren't exactly swimming in gold coins like Uncle Scrooge from Ducktales (Ahhh! That theme song brings back fond memories). We were trying to use what we already had and not buy anything new until we knew what we needed.

I've told you that I am into reusing things. This is a case of reusing gone bad... I was not so tricky when I  made that headboard. It looks like some weirdo put table runners on the wall.  Well guess what! That is exactly what it was. I had purchased them for the dining room but they didn't work. So I walked around the house with them in my hands putting them on various pieces of furniture and holding them up to random walls until I gave up and threw them up behind my bed.

I spent a lot of time painting the back of that bookcase blue but then I stuffed it as full as I could with books... all my hard work never to be noticed. Mr. Blue&Brown is now spending his time in the garage.

The TV Stand was an old kitchen cabinet from Habitat For Humanity Restore. I added a board on top and a terrible paint job to turn it into a TV stand. That brown buddy now resides in the nursery closet.

This ornate, little table never worked. I tried the poor fella in about 100 different places. He landed here until Senor Craigslist stepped in to solve the problem. 

The master bedroom is an enormous room. The way we set up the furniture made it feel a lot smaller than it was. It is a long and fairly narrow room so it took me a while to figure out how the space would work best for us.

After living with it for a few months we knew we could do better than our initial arrangement. 

We played the furniture movin' and switchin' game a few times. 

We changed the pocket door to our bathroom to a swinging door.

Art went up. Art came down.

Tile and other random bathroom remodel supplies decorated our bedroom for a while.


Here is where we are now:

Ahhh! so much better! It is also so much more my style. I would like to say it is Scott's style too but he no longer gets to have a style opinion. The style banishment happened when I saw his Craigslist couch purchase almost 7 years ago. It was an orange, corduroy couch with grease stains covering 85% of it and wood paneling all over it. I can confidently say that I have never seen an uglier couch... AND he paid $100 for it. Come on, Scott!

We still have a few changes to make in the master bedroom- mostly small.

Below is a list of the steps that got us from where we started to where we are now. 

Step 1: Move in. Throw a bunch of random stuff into the room and live with it for a while to figure out how we wanted to use the space.

Step 2: Rearrange the furniture and add a seating area.

Step 3: Redo a desk with a funky chevron pattern.

Step 4: Redo an old chair for the desk.

Step 5: New comforter and lamps.

Step 6: Headboard, Part 1

Step 7: Make some wedding related art.

Step 8: New entertainment center.

Step 9: Add some new art

Step 10: Headboard, Part 2. Finishing touches. Try to bring it all together.
